"Bye Bye, Miss American Pie..."

Believe it or not, fifty years ago today, is the day the music died...

I have my father's album of Don McLean's America Pie. If I can't listen to the scratch of the needle on a record as McLean  sings this song and the turntable spins, I don't want to listen to this song on a cd or mp3. It just doesn't feel right.

I remember it well, I had just turned 15 and I had been sick and was listening to my radio when they came on and told us what had happened..I cried for days...way back a year or two ago I wrote a post on the supposed meaning of the song Bye Bye American pie..it's really interesting how he interwove rock and roll history into the song along with buddy, richie and the big bopper.

I never cared for "American Pie." My mom, however, loved it, and I was treated to repeated playings of it in the car until I wanted to open the door at highway speed and jump out. (I got my revenge years later when she was riding in MY car and I played Blondie and Courtney Love.)

I honestly thought it had been longer than that.

And "American Pie" is one of the greats I think. I also love McLean's song "Vincent". It makes me cry almost every time I hear it.
