"See You Later, Alligator. And Don't Forget My Mashed Potatoes!"

Back in the mid-90's - - Dear sweet Jesus, was it THAT long ago?!? - - I the first replacement in the original cast of Schoolhouse Rock Live! here in Chicago.

The show was a HUGE hit here, the original cast had just come back from an Off-Broadway engagement and I was THRILLED to be in the show (and it's amazing 11 month long run).

But at 90 minutes with no intermission and songs coming one right after the other, the show kicked my ass. Especially because my character, Tom, was the glue of the show - - the character who was propelled into the world of Schoolhouse Rock, so I was in EVERY number.

Except this one.

Which made me sad because this is one of my favorite Schoolhouse Rock songs. It just doesn't get any better than Essra Mohawk singing Sufferin' Til Suffrage.

Right at the beginning, the lyrics seem to speak our struggle for Gay Marriage...

"If we're all created equal, that's us too!"

Amen, sister! Amen!

Love, love, LOVE Schoolhouse Rock. Never saw the stage show, unfortunately. Aren't those tunes annoyingly catchy? The only way I know the preamble to the Constitution is to sing it, like everyone else in our generation.

Superman just told me that many women were tortured to death in police custody during the suffrage movement.

Yep, I see parallels to the gay rights struggle. It might take a while, it might hurt, but right will win eventually.

I saw these every Saturday morning (like every good kid in the 70s and 80s) but I don't recall ever having seen this one.

I loved that song the best! I loved it even more when I found out that Essra Mohawk got started in Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention, dressed in guy drag (sort of)...

My first day in Constitutional Law in law school, the professor asked if anyone knew the Preamble to the Constitution. The entire class sang it for him. He mumbled "They do it every time . . . "

I'm sorry that I never saw the stage show. My son's class saw a high school production of it, but I imagine it wasn't quite the same as seeing perfeshnulls such as yourself do it. We are big fans of the DVDs of all the original cartoons though. The kids watch them over and over and over.
