Windy City Queercast: Southern Belles

I'm back on the Windy City Queercast this week.

It's episode 224...

...and I have BEGGED Amy to put me on at least one minute of episode 227, just so I can do my best Jackée Harry impersonation and say, "Hello, Meh-reeeeeee"...

...and the episode is entitled Southern Belles Are Back!

I would love to be a Southern Belle. I'm afraid I'm a little too "redneck white trash" to actually BE a Southern Belle.

But I aspire to be a Southern Belle. I actually aspire to be Julia Sugarbaker by way of Dixie Carter.

To be a Southern Belle would be nice, but to be a Southern Belle with a strong opinion who speaks her mind would be heaven. Sheer heaven.

I mean, take one look at this clip and tell me you don't want to be "Julia: The Terminator."

"I find you rude, lazy, horny and dumb."

I LOVE Dixie Carter. My mother looks a lot like her. and she is just as southern, elegant and kick-ass.

It's interesting: Julia's rants are funnier now, 20 years later, once the "not again/eyeroll" factor wore off. While the show was on, she was really funny for a while, but in later seasons, they pushed the envelope so much that it was sometimes over the top and she let people have it who didn't always deserve it (and she was gruff and impatient with people for no good reason sometimes). Kinda like now, I can enjoy watching the episodes with Alison (Julia Duffy). Back then, I just HATED the character. HATED, HATED, HATED her...but she was actually a good actress with good comic timing.

I liked the fact that when Julia was wrong, they usually gave her a scene where she had to eat some major crow...and she did it with grace.

Besides Gabby (from your clip), we mustn't forget Ray Don: "And I'd like to thank YOU, Ray Don!" I think he was the first guy to get the sharp edge of her tongue...

It's too bad Dixie's such a Republican in real life...

I think I may be saying somewhat the same as Aaron, but while I loved her rants when they were something that just happened, you could tell they were painfully formulaic in the latter seasons. In college (where gay met straight) we used to have bets on at what point into the show the "Julia Rocket" would take off.

I do love the Ray Don rants though.

Face it. Every time your legs head for the ceiling and your hoop skirt ends up in a puddle around your neck... you ARE a Southern Belle.

Julia Sugarbaker taught me to be gay.

I always wanted to be Julia Sugarbaker. I have no design sense whatsoever, so I like to think I was the courtroom version of Julia. But either way, I'm not doing Hal Holbrook.

All hail Julia Sugarbaker!

One of my most favorite rants is when she explains "the night the lights went out in Georgia". Just in case you'd like a refresher:
