Correction: Tony Award nominee Dolly Parton.
Yes, the critics may be giving Dolly's Broadway musical version of 9 to 5 all kinds of Hell in print, but the Tony committee nominated Dolly's music and lyrics for Best Score.
They also nominated Allison Janney's performance as Violet for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical, Mark Kudisch's performance as Mr. Hart for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical and Andy Blakenbuehler's choreography is up for Best Choreography.
But, in a "Streisand/PRINCE OF TIDES/Academy Awards" move, 9 to 5 was not nominated for Best Musical.
Which probably means that the Dolly's score was nominated so the Tony Awards telecast could have Dolly Parton present to help boost ratings.
I could care less. I get the Tony Awards and Dolly Parton together in one place at one time! That's every gay, redneck's dream come true!
Here's Dolly talking about her nomination...
P.S. For the longest time, I thought the lyric of 9 to 5's second verse where Dolly sings, "You're in the same boat with a lot of your friends" was...
"You smoke dope with a lot of your friends"
...which made sense to me, since the girls get high as Hell in that one scene.
So, the next time you sing 9 to 5, sing it with that lyric. I think you'll enjoy it.
