"They've Got an Awful Lot of Coffee in Brazil"

Just a quick post to let everyone know that Philip was released from the hospital this evening. His surgery went well, there were no complications and best of all, he can once again drink coffee!

This was a HUGE issue for Philip, and I'm sure that if the tables were turned, I would have been screaming for a Diet Coke just as loudly. Not "just for the taste of it," but because I'm addicted to it.  Just like Philip is addicted to coffee. Or rather, caffeine.

And like any good addiction, the withdrawals are Hellish.  Philip's withdrawals hit after his second day in the hospital, and his caffeine headache was massive.  Pain killers weren't helping at all, but near the end of the day, it came...

The caffeine IV drip.

I'm not kidding.  It was a clear, plastic bag full of caffeinated saline. I was so jealous.

You know how everyone always jokes about their need for coffee by saying something like, "Just inject it into my veins"? Well, we're not that far off really.

I wonder if the IV bag full of Diet Coke will be carbinated?  Hmmm...

Luckily, a few hours after his surgery yesterday, the ban on food and drink was lifted.  I received a text from Philip about 10:00 p.m. last night that simply said, "Coffee!!!"

Which is almost as funny as another line he kept saying after his gallbladder had been removed...

"Do I look thinner?"

Jokes so soon after surgery?  I knew Philip would be fine.  I felt like Sally Field in Steel Magnolias when Julia Roberts was coming out of her seizure...

"Awww, she's makin' sense now"

Yay, Philip's well again and joking!

Any thinner? The boy's a rail as it is...as my gramma used to say, "Eat, eat, I almost see right through you!"

And how jealous am I that you got licked by Philip? :)

HUGS...

I know what I'm asking for the next time I'm in the hospital.

WONDERful!! I'm so glad Philip made it through. He was in the hospital for a mighty long time, it seems to me.

I love the idea of a caffeine IV drip. Really. I've had caffeine withdrawal headaches before. NOTHING touches those bad boys. Nothing I've tried anyway. Haven't tried Oxycontin though.

Yay! HUGE hugs to Philip! And hats off to you, again, Stephen... if I'm ever in the hospital, I'm calling you because...

1. You will make me laugh.
2. You will keep the nurses in line. "Broadway don't go for pills and booze!"
3. You will blog about it.

It took me a while to place where I'd heard "They've got an awful lot of coffee in Brazil," but now I remember it from a pseudo-night-club TV special with Rosemary Clooney and Michael Feinstein. It may have been Rosie's daugther who sang that number.

No need to publish this comment to your blog. Just wanted to thank you for the reminder of fun music and fun performers.

Give my best to Philip even tho' he has no idea who I am (nor do I have any idea who I am).

when Philip started in with the jokes you should have just said, "Drink your juice, Shelby... drink your juice."

Caffeinated saline? I've been a doctor for 15 years and I've never heard of such. Jay-sus...I'm really missing out.

Thanks for the update on Philip. Sounds like the two of you are good for each other.
