Fratboy Friday

The pictures in today's Fratboy Friday spoke to me.

In other people's words...

P.S. I didn't realize it, but last week was the 100th edition of Fratboy Friday. This is Fratboy Friday 101. Which sounds like a class. And should be.

"Do You Know What It Is You Do To Me?"

With all the buzz on the blogs these days focusing on that "ab crunching jackass" Ryan Reynolds landing the role of Hal Jordan, a.k.a. the Green Lantern, I wanted to take a moment and focus on another superhero hottie.

One who hasn't really been given a break. By Hollywood or by the fanboys.

Sure, his casting as "the big, blue Boy Scout" was break enough, but "Superman Returns" wasn't THAT bad folks. If you think it was, watch "Daredevil" again and you'll change your opinion.

Come on. Just look at cute, beefy Brandon Routh.

The only problem with this picture is that it doesn't show one of his best features. You remember how he filled out those Super-briefs in the movie.

Once again quoting Charles Pierce...

"The last time I saw a basket like that it was around Red Riding Hood's arm!"

And as for that t-shirt, all I have to say is...

"I wish I was, baby!
I SO wish I was sitting RIGHT THERE!"

"And Now, Let's End This Meeting on a High Note!"

This being Bastille Day, I've been humming La Marseillaise most of the day. And when I'm not humming it, I've been singing it. Out loud.

I learned the words in my high school French class. And from that great scene in "Casablanca."

Thank God I work alone on Tuesdays. Anyone who worked near me today would have killed me. And since it's le quatorze juillet, they probably would have taken me to the guillotine. Just like Marie Antoinette.

Ah, la révolution and Marie Antoinette. I think one of my idols, Charles Pierce, said it best.

Marie Antoinette...

"She wasn't the only queen in history to lose her head over a basket, y'know."

After Today, I Need Charles Pierce as Mae West! STAT!

Today has been a difficult and slightly depressing day, and I need a laugh.

I started the morning with a performance of ALADDIN...

...which wasn't bad, but I don't think that painting your face blue, pulling around a carpet stapled to a wheeled platform and pretending that it's "flying," and singing any note above Bea Arthur's range any time before noon is quite what Thespis had in mind when he stepped from the chorus and created "theatre"...

.
..If he'd known that this was where it was going, he'd have stayed in the chorus. Trust me...

...and after the play, I went to my office and discovered that my computer wouldn't - - not couldn't, but wouldn't - - access the internet. I tried all the standard techniques / tricks to fix the problem but nothing would work, so instead of making a dent in my To Do List, I played "Uneducated, Redneck I.T. Guy." With myself. It wasn't fun. At all.

And right before I left work, my mother called to tell me that her employer has changed health insurance policies and under the new policy, she will no longer have a co-pay, but she will have a $2,000 deductible. My mother's salary is very small, so this was too much for her. My brother and I will do everything we can to help her with expenses, but my mother's initial response was that she would no longer see her doctor. At all.

My mother is diabetic. Not seeing a doctor regular checkups is simply not an option. This new insurance policy is basically destroying her spirit, her health and the last of what was left of her "job satisfaction."

And hearing my mother so upset preys on my guilt. My guilt for not living near my family, for not being nearby to see her on a more regular basis, for leaving town and pursuing my goals, my life. Needless to say, after I spoke with my mother, I was depressed.

Thankfully, I had a meeting with Karen Bronson and Doug, Mark and Debbie to rehearse their upcoming Season of Concern cabaret benefit.

Seeing them, laughing with them and singing with them make me feel so much better.

And after discussing this clip with Karen on the ride back home, I felt it the perfect way for me to laugh my way out of a difficult day.

I've talked about Charles Pierce before when I posted the videos of his brilliant Bette Davis impersonation, and these clips are from the same concert. Only this time he tackles Mae West. And his Mae is just like his Bette - - pure comic genius.

"I woke up in a cow pasture outside of town. There was a bull chasing me. I was tired, so I ran."

It's funny because it's true. Well, for me anyway...

Charles Pierce

In the age of the Google Search, I am amazed by what people don't know.

And when you add to that the incredible clips that can be found on YouTube...

...and I'm not talking about the blathering on of some overly-eyelined, Britney-loving, psychotic homo-hillbilly...

...or some self-obsessed high school girl who can't sing, so she lip syncs THE CELL BLOCK TANGO and then other people watch it... REPEATEDLY...

...I am amazed by what people don't CARE to know.

Especially gay men.

To break any rule or to take anything to the next level - - whatever the Hell that means - - you have to know what came BEFORE.

And for some reason, today's young gay men tend to act as if they invented everything and if it's old, it must be worn out, tired and uninteresting.

I'm sure this is just me entering into middle age and feeling increasingly invisible when I walk into gay bars these days.

As Edina says in the "Birthday" episode of ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS...

"It's like I hit an oil patch at 35 and now I'm just SKIDDING toward the grave, darling!"

Still, by not caring about what came before, we're losing a little piece of our gay history. And really, we don't have very much gay history to lose.

So, when I find a clip like this on YouTube, it makes me so happy that I can post it and share it with as many people as possible.

This is the incomparable Charles Pierce in a show he did at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in 1982.

Charles passed away in 1999, but luckily we have little pieces of his live performances to show us the brilliance of his female illusion.

This is the tail end of the concert where Charles is doing my favorite of his impersonations - - Ms. Bette Davis.

Watch these clips and you'll see bits and pieces of a performance style that has been copied by a few current day entertainers.

Namely me. Hey, if you're gonna steal, steal from the best.

P.S. Like Leif Garrett, Charles Pierce also guest starred on an episode of WONDER WOMAN.

He does Bette Davis AND acts with Lynda Carter. What more do you want, folks?!?

"Oh No, Anita, No. Anita, No."

Serendipity Theatre Collective is offering another installment of 2nd Story tonight at @mostphere.

Tonight, the evening will benefit Season of Concern and they have kindly asked me to host.

2nd Story is an evening of storytelling, music and usually wine tasting, but tonight, it's all about cocktails... which is probably why I was asked to host...

I never met a vodka I didn't like.

Being Pride Month, the stories tonight are about the gay and lesbian experience, so I've been asked to provide a little toast before each of the three stories being read.

I am rarely if ever speechless, but I figured I should do a little research so that my toast won't simply be me quoting a line from one of my favorite tv shows... like what Shirley wrote in Laverne's yearbook...

If in Heaven, we don't meet
Hand in hand, we'll bear the heat

And if it ever gets too hot

Pepsi-Cola hits the spot

So, in my googling, I came across this website of gay and lesbian quotes and I found these three in this exact order...

"As a mother, I know that homosexuals cannot biologically reproduce children; therefore, they must recruit our children." - Anita Bryant, 1977

"If gays are granted rights, next we'll have to give rights to prostitutes and to people who sleep with St. Bernards and to nailbiters." - Anita Bryant

"Anita Bryant like Anita hole in the head." - Graffiti

For those of you who don't know Anita Bryant or believe her to be one of the women from WEST SIDE STORY, I'll just say this - - you know Ann Coulter, right? Well...

Ann Coulter is sort of the beta 2.0 version of Anita Bryant.

Anita Bryant 2: Electric Boogaloo!

That clear it up for ya?

I could call Ms. Bryant so many names and rant and rave, but I found a quote on another site that calls Ms. Bryant exactly what she is.

This is attributed to the uber-fabulous female impersonator, Mr. Charles Pierce...

“If you ever become a mother, can I have one of the puppies?”

Come to 2nd Story tonight if you're free. I've read the stories and they are really wonderful!
