"Grace Kelly," Mika and "The Point" of Coming Out

At tonight's Semi-Finals for the Windy City Gay Idol that I judged, one of the contestants sang this song - - Grace Kelly by Mika - - and I couldn't quite get it out of my head.

After checking it out on YouTube, I am now officially in love with the song. Even though the singer, Mika, apparently doesn't want to talk about his sexuality. As he says...
"I never talk about anything to do with my sexuality. I just don't think I need to. People ask me all the time. But I just don't see the point."

You want to know what "the point" is? Quite frankly, "the point" is being honest with yourself and your soul. "The point" is being a role model to young gay men and lesbians who need to know that they are not alone in the world. "The point" is to admit your homosexuality BEFORE you're arrested for giving blow jobs in the Men's Room at Macy's.

So many gay male pop stars and Hollywood actors pull that shit - - "I just don't see the point." It disgusts me.

So, I probably won't download his song or his album on iTunes. But I will post the song here. Because I enjoy it.

I'm a fickle fuck, aren't I?

it is a catchy tune Stephen...although 1970 called and wants that hair cut back.

Yeah, this little fucker annoys me. I did, however, totally download his album illegally because it's fun music.

He's either capitalizing on the flam-buoyancy of his career staying alive by being a "camp" act or pulling a Clay Aiken.

I can't wait until they find him in a bathhouse getting plowed.

He is adorable, but definitely gay. BTW, I see him more as being arrested in the men's room at Harrod's - seems more his style. At least he's cuter than Clay Aiken. Besides, we Americans love Brit-accented gays - coming out wouldn't hurt his popularity here at all, nor in England I would imagine.

Maybe he doesn't see "the point" because he's neither homosexual nor heterosexual, but rather, "autosexual" (meaning he only loves himself--like Michael Jackson--but will diddle anything that won't tell on him).

Just a theory...

I really like this song...but Love Today ROCKS. And in some ways, I agree, who or what he sleeps with is his business. It would be nice if he came out but his decision to make his sexuality private is his prerogative. But if he's channeling Grace and Freddie...I think people will put two and two together.

Stephen I love this song.
AND I can sing the shit out of it.

but, remember, MIKA was 19 when he made that quote. 19! Did you have your sexuality all together and ready to talk about it a public way when you were 19? I think we just need to give Mr. One-of-my-songs-is-called-"suckin-to-hard-on-my-lollipop" a little more time to find out who he is before he announces it in print. If I had been asked about my sexuality by a magazine when I was nineteen. . .I would have died. The fault here, I think, lay with the media for giving a shit what a teenager thinks about sexuality. Of course Lyndsay Lohan's gonna have something stupid to say to grown up questions. . .she's barely old enough to vote.
That's my two cents.

Oh, and officially, MIKA's got a mouth that REALLY wants me to sit on it.

You are just discovering Mika NOW???

I totally agree with you about "the point". The straight world automatically assumes everyone else is straight. But not pointing out that misconception, Mika furthers the myth that there really aren't that many gays and lesbians out there being discriminated against because they're not straight.

Mark :-)

What mark in de said? Exactly.

Plus, I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who translates "I don't talk about my orientation" as "I take it up the butt."

I love Mika, and all his songs mentioned here, but I must say I downloaded his stuff well over a year ago.

I'm still annoyed with his reluctance to come out, and you all have made great points about it.

Skinny young kid sure does sound a whole lot like Freddy. Eerie.

I love Mika. Love the whole album. It's just fun. The ambiguity reminds me of the Ricky Martin interview with Barbara Walters awhile back. I don't agree with it but it's a little like Lily Tomlin and Michael Stipe saying they thought their sexuality was beside the point. It diverted attention from their work. Anyway I can see both sides of the issue.
